St Agatha’s Parish, (in collaboration with all parents of First Holy Communicants) runs a programme of preparation for children who belong to the parish and are over the age of 7 years (i.e. in year 3 or above in the primary school) who wish to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion

The Programme followed is called “I Belong” and parents will help their child complete each session in the home.  We have an excellent team of experienced catechists all of whom are CRB checked.  The main teaching sessions are held after school at 3.30p.m. until 4.30 p.m. and take place in the Church.

The First Communion Programme takes place between the middle of November and middle of May during which time Parents will also be asked to attend various evening meetings in order to be apprised of learning objectives to help them prepare their children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.  The programme will commence with such a meeting for parents and this will be followed on the next Monday afternoon by an introductory session for the children and an Inscription Service at the following Sunday morning at the 10.30 a.m. Mass.  The children usually complete the first 2 sessions before they break up for the Christmas holidays.

After the Christmas holidays the programme will continue in the same format but will begin work on their Reconciliation Booklets before half term.  There will be a meeting for parents (to help prepare their children to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation) at 7.30p.m. on the first Tuesday after the holidays.

The children will now be divided into two groups so that they can be carefully prepared to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Group One will come to the Church at 3.30p.m.on the last Friday in February to rehearse in preparation for them receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation the following day (on Saturday) at 10.30a.m.  Group Two will repeat this format on the next Friday i.e. attend for rehearsal at 3.30p.m. and will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation the following day at 10.30a.m.

The remainder of the programme is comprised of short sessions which are delivered 2 at a time until the start of the Easter holidays.  There will be another evening meeting of preparation for parents at 7.30p.m. in the church on the first Tuesday after the Easter holidays.  Sessions 9 and 10 of the programme will be delivered to the children in the Church at 3.30p.m. on the following Monday.  Group One rehearse for First Holy Communion on the last Friday in April in preparation to receive Holy Communion 2 days later in the Church at a special celebration Mass which will be held at 12 noon on the first Sunday in May.  Group Two will rehearse to receive First Holy Communion on the first Friday in May (at 3.30p.m. in the Church) and will receive their First Holy Communion on the second Sunday in May at 12 noon.

The final session of the programme, No. 11 “To Love and to Serve”, will be held at 3.30p.m. in the Church the very next day (Monday).
